Best Stays in the Great Outdoors
With the holidays over, but the weather still mild, Autumn is the perfect time to go and discover some of the Island’s secret hidden gems. From safari tents to helicopters – we have some truly unique accommodation all nestled among some glorious natural habitats – perfect for chilling back and becoming one with the great outdoors.
Here’s our top picks this autumn.
Now in its 4th year, Tom’s Eco Lodges offer boutique glamping at its finest. The lodges are nestled behind trees on the top of open farmland looking out with far reaching views all the way across the Solent towards the New Forest and across to Tennyson Down in the West Wight.
The safari style canvas lodges are like a home from home with running hot water, wood burning stoves, real comfy beds, Wi-Fi, sofas, flushing loos and power sockets and lighting. Lodges 1 & 5 even come with their own outdoor log fired hot tubs – so bathing under the stars is a must.
Outside the lodges offer BBQ, campfire & pizza oven, outdoor games such as volleyball and badminton and you can even collect your own eggs for breakfast from the free range chickens just across the field – so you’ll never have to leave your lodge during your stay – and let’s face it you won’t want to!
For a truly unique glamping experience Windmill Campersite is one to visit. Located just 5 minutes from Carisbrooke Castle in the middle of the Island, the site looks out over the Bowcombe valley and offers an eclectic array of accommodation choices – jam packed full of character.
Choose from 'Ellie' or 'Hector' the two Shepherds Huts, a Hive Camper Pod or the piece de résistance 'Galahad' the Westland Wessex helicopter! 'Galahad' and the huts offer comfy beds, sink, cookers and fridges, while the Hive pods are crawl in sleeping pods perfect for campers who wish to turn up in the car and be able to jump straight in, on a foam mattress without any of the stress of taking your tent with you.
The onsite facilities are brilliantly thought out too. ‘Showershack’ offers modern shower and toilet facilities, enhanced by music, hot air and is enriched with solar power electric and water. While ‘Bluebell' is a very pretty toilet and shower block, housing 2 bath shower room ensuites.
'Caterator' the communal catering unit offers washing up facilities, dishwasher, fridge, kettle and toaster. 'The Spudomatic' is a jacket potato oven and 'Big Bertha' a large BBQ/Pizza oven (to be operated by over 25’s only!). Also onsite is 'Mrs Fire Pit' where everyone can put the world to right over a roasted marshmallow – so you really don’t need to bring anything with you to stay here apart from PJ’s and that big bag of marshmallows!
